There Are Already Too Many Places to Work. Connectors Fix That.
Construction software keeps adding rooms.
A place for the set. A place for markups. A place for issues. A place for the schedule. A place for the field. Each one solves something real. Stacked together, they ask the same people to remember one more login, one more tab, one more place to check before the day ends.
Most teams do not need another destination. They need the work that has to get done to show up inside the tools and processes they already run.
That is what headless tools are for. Construction needs them. Maybe it just doesn't know it yet.
What "headless" means when the subject is tools
In software, "headless" means a system that runs with no screen of its own. You do not open it to do the job. It connects to something you already use, does the work in the background, and puts the result where you already are.
You already trust this pattern outside construction:
- Card fraud checks. Your bank screens a purchase as it is approved. There is no fraud app to open. You hear about it only when a charge looks off.
- Spam filtering. Mail gets sorted before you read it. Nobody visits a spam dashboard each morning.
- Automated tests in software. When a developer submits a change, tests run on their own and post pass or fail on that change.
The pattern is the same each time. The work attaches to a process that already exists, starts when new work shows up, and lands where the person already works.
Headless is not a drawing-QA buzzword. It is a design choice about where work lives: connect the tool to the process. Do not create another place to do the process.
The industry already has enough places to work
Look at a normal week on a job. The PDF set lands in one system. Redlines happen in another. Issues get assigned somewhere else. The coordinator still downloads the package and asks the same census questions by hand. Is every sheet in the index actually in the set? Does callout 5 on A-501 point to a real detail? Does door tag 214 have a row in the schedule? Does keynote 12 match the legend?
Doing that properly is a full census. Every tag, every callout, every index line, every sheet. On a big set that is thousands of cross references, and nobody has those hours. So it gets spot checked, and the rest goes out with the set.
Another dashboard does not fix that. It becomes one more upload, one more login, one more tab nobody opens on a Friday afternoon. You minimized nothing. You added a destination.
The better move is fewer places to work, not more. Connect the check to the folders and tools where the set already lives. Let the finding show up where the team already assigns work.
How MarkedUp stays out of the way
MarkedUp is one example of that idea applied to drawing integrity. The point is not to pull teams into a new home for drawings. It is to run the census in the background and return findings into the places people already use.
MarkedUp is not a chatbot and does not use general AI models. It reads sheets with computer vision and text recognition, then runs rule-based checks, the same checks on every sheet. Think of a careful coordinator doing a backcheck who never skips the last 200 sheets because it is 6 p.m.
In plain terms:
1. Connect where sets already land. Drawings already live somewhere: Trimble Connect, Trimble ProjectSight, Autodesk Forma, Google Drive, or SharePoint. Connect MarkedUp once. In Forma, point it at the whole project or only the discipline folders you care about.
2. Listen for new PDF packages. When a new package lands, MarkedUp picks it up. Nobody uploads the same set somewhere else.
3. Run the integrity checks. Sheet index against the sheets present. Callouts against details. Door tags against the door schedule. Keynotes against the legend. Schedules against the plan, plus related MEP checks.
4. Send findings back where the team already works. The marked-up PDF and flagged issues return to the tools people already open. MarkedUp stays the check in between, not another destination for the set.
Findings land in tools you already open
These connectors are live today, each listed in the marketplace of the tool it works with:
- MarkedUp for Autodesk Forma on the Autodesk App Store: listens to the Forma folders you choose and pushes flagged issues into the Forma Issue Tracker.
- MarkedUp + Trimble Connect on the Trimble Marketplace (Certified by Trimble): connect the Connect folder where sets land; findings come back into the Connect side of the job.
- MarkedUp + Trimble ProjectSight on the Trimble Marketplace (Certified by Trimble): the same folder-listening audit for teams that already run the job from ProjectSight, with findings returned where the team already works.
- MarkedUp + Bluebeam in the Bluebeam Integrations Directory: issues sync into Bluebeam so the team can work markups where they already review drawings.
Google Drive and SharePoint cover teams that keep sets there. The marked-up PDF opens in Bluebeam, Procore, or Adobe, wherever your team already marks up drawings.
Catch it while it is still a markup
A broken reference is cheap to fix on paper and expensive everywhere else. A callout with no detail turns into an RFI. A door tag that does not match the schedule turns into the wrong hardware on site, then a change order, then rework. Boring errors, a few at a time, all job long.
Headless tools move the catch upstream without asking anyone to change where they work. The check runs when the set lands. The finding shows up in Forma, Connect, ProjectSight, or Bluebeam, and gets fixed while it is still a markup.
The best tool is the one that does not become another place
Nobody thanks their spam filter. Nobody opens their bank's fraud system to say good job. That is the point. When a check is reliable and lives in the background, people stop thinking about it and start trusting what comes through.
Drawing sets deserve the same treatment, and so does every other process that currently forces a new destination just to get the work done. Connect the tool to the process. Minimize the places people have to go.
